Ahimsa

“In the presence of one firmly established in non-violence, all hostilities cease.” This is the sutra on Ahimsa from The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, translation by Sri Swami Satchitananda .

Turned into a positive statement it becomes:  in the presence of one firmly established in loving-kindness, all hostilities cease.

Loving Kindness, refraining from violence and harm, is the first of the Yamas.  In the oral tradition of the Vedic teachings, before we could highlight something in all caps and bold in order to emphasize a concept, whatever needed to be emphasized was put at the top of the list.  Ahimsa, loving kindness/non-violence, is at the top of the list of Yamas in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.  This position makes it the most important of the five.  We’re meant to integrate this top of the list item, loving kindness, into all the other yamas that come afterward in the list:  truthfulness, non-stealing, chastity/ethical sexual boundaries, and non-hoarding.  More on that in following weeks.

This week, I hope you enjoy these two recordings which integrate a short reflection on ahimsa with asanas for revitalizing the marma regions of the Anahata Chakra, the heart chakra.  You’ll want to have a strap or belt for the gentle sequence this week.
